The Predetermined Part of Me 

 

My name is Hasti and it means existence in Persian, my parents gave me the name, and they got it from a famous book of Iranian poetry called, Divan-e Hafez by the poet Hafez.

There is an ancient festival in Iran called Ylada night where people open this book of poems randomly on a page and it gives them an omen or guidance. 

 

Therefore, my parents got my name from this book, but my name is also used grammatically in Persian, Hasti comes from the word Boodan in Persian meaning Be or Being in English so people can use my name twice in a sentence so Hasti Hasti? it means Hasti are you there? 

Because of this I got made fun of a lot when I was growing up in school or other events,

which can be annoying for a little girl, but I have gotten better at putting up with it.

 

Nobody in my family has my name, and back home I only personally met a few people with the same name as mine. It is not unusual but also it is not that common.

Coming to the U.S, I have met a lot of people who struggle to say my name, which is honestly fine with me.

This hasn’t made me want to have a nickname because I like my name and also, I can’t really think of a nickname that would come out of my five lettered name.
